Châteauguay’s Fernand‐Seguin eco-centre will have a full autumn schedule this year. The nature guides of Héritage Saint‐Bernard will offer free tours to those who are interested in discovering the rich flora and fauna in this exceptional nature site. This activity is part of the five interpretation activities taking place from September 12 to October 23, 2011. During this period, the reception chalet will be open every day between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.
While guided walks lasting one hour will be offered for free, reservations are required. For each of the activities, the first departure is scheduled at 11:00 am and the second one at 1:30 pm. Children who are eight years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Aside from the guided walks provided by Héritage Saint‐Bernard, the Fernand‐Seguin ecological centre has more than five kilometres of trails that cross a sugar maple hickory, a typical forest usually found in Quebec’s south west region.
Sunday, September 25 – Discover the world of birds
This first activity will be carried out with a nature guide who will demystify the universe of our bird friends. Walking through the forest, you will observe how birds behave as they prepare for winter. With 220 bird species in our territory, there are many aspects about their life that you can learn. Of course, a pair of binoculars is indispensable for the observation tour so don’t forget them!
Sunday, October 2 – those marvellous mushrooms
Not so well known to most people, the mushroom “kingdom” is immense and mysterious. For this second activity, you can discover the beauty and complexity of various species with a passionate mycology guide.
Sunday, October 9 – Quiz: the trees of wooded areas
The third activity will take place when the trees change into their beautiful and blazing red, orange and yellow colors. A nature guide who will be on-site will ask you a question if you decide to participate in this activity: do you really know the type of vegetation around you? To answer this question, a walk through the trails of the Fernand‐Seguin eco-centre is planned.
Sunday, October 16 – Mother Nature prepares for winter
Another weekend, another outing! With a nature expert guide accompanying you, you will discover how the region’s fauna will deal with winter without any problems. Participants will be able to touch the fur skins, examine skeletons, and answer the guide’s questions.
Saturday, October 22 – Observing stars at night and listening to sounds of night life
The autumn programme will end with a bang – an observation of the beautiful sky with the stars at night! The guides don’t sleep at night…instead, they’ll invite you to join them for an evening walk to listen to the sounds of nature and to gaze up the autumn sky! Activity begins at 7:00 pm.
“We work with the resources we have at our disposal; that means working with each of the workers and their respective strengths; this way we’re able to come up with a well-balanced programme. It’s undeniably a programme not to be missed”, said Marie-Hélène Dorais of Héritage Saint-Bernard.
