SAINT-RÉMI – 348 invitees came together at the Saint-Rémi Community Centre on March 31 to attend the Soirée reconnaissance 2012 (2012 Recognition Evening).
With the theme of the Agristars, the gala evening awarded more than 40 individuals from the entire western region of Montérégie for their involvement in the Union des producteurs agricoles (farm producers union); it also highlighted the farming milieu in general. A total of 40 winners were recognized for their efforts, half of them having been involved for 10, 15, 20, and 25 years with the UPA.
The most prestigious award of the evening - Coup de Chapeau – was handed to André Marleau, a dairy producer from Saint-Télésphore. This award was intended to honour an individual who had “significantly contributed to the advancement of agriculture and for enhancing the value of farm work in the region.” The award was given to Mr. Marleau because of his involvement with the UPA and for his outreach efforts to children by visiting schools in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region. It is the crowning glory of a career and a passion. “I have always loved farming and I like going to schools and meeting future consumers so I can share my passion with them”, said Mr. Marleau warmly, after having received his award.
For the other awards, four winners received recognition from their peers, aimed to feature the “hidden” work of some people who served as administrators in one of the affiliated groups but who were not presidents. These awardees were Jean-Guy Vanier, Roch Riendeau, Normand Vinet and Gilles Dansereau.
Two awards - Bons coups – were given to Jacquelin Bisaillon, Johanne Trottier, and Bernard Cousineau. “I wasn’t expecting to receive the award”, said Mr. Bisaillon who received the award because of his involvement during the 2011 spring floods. “When I helped the farmers, it wasn’t to receive an award”, he explained. He was nevertheless delighted to have been honoured.
